What's Included on Your Na Pali Coast Whale Watching Tour
During whale season, the same crossing you’d take any time of year becomes an active watch; your captain and crew are working the water for spouts and surfacing whales the whole way out and back. That’s on top of everything the standard tour already covers: snorkel gear, flotation devices, a deli-style lunch (turkey, ham, roast beef, or vegetarian), soft drinks, and local juices.
The snorkel stop still runs about one hour at Makole, Ke’e Beach (Tunnels), or Nualolo Kai, depending on the day’s ocean conditions, and the route still passes the Na Pali Coast sea caves, including Pirates Cave (Waiahuakua) and Honopū Arch, entered as long as ocean conditions allow safe access. Whale season doesn’t change the itinerary; it changes what your crew is watching for along it.
Humpback whales are possible along the route roughly December through April, alongside the spinner dolphins, Pacific Bottlenose dolphins, and honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles) that are here year-round, plus reef fish and coral at the snorkel stop. None of it is guaranteed; wildlife behavior and ocean conditions vary day to day, but a whale season tour means more eyes on the water looking for them than the regular route gets.

Dave and Charlie were absolutely awesome — genuinely kind, helpful, funny, and really knowledgeable about the coast and the area. They shared interesting information throughout the trip and they were always checking on everyone and making sure we were comfortable. We had somewhat “difficult” weather and ocean conditions (and rain) at times, but they handled everything so well and professionally that we always felt 100% safe.
The Na Pali Coast itself is just unreal from the water. We got surprisingly close to the cliffs, which was SO cool and gives you a completely different perspective than seeing them from land. The scale of the cliffs, the valleys, waterfalls, caves and all the different colors are something pictures really don’t capture properly.
And we saw SO MANY dolphins!! Not just one or two in the distance — there were dolphins all around us, which made an already incredible day even better. Definitely one of those moments you remember after the trip is over.
I did get a little seasick, so one piece of advice: if you’re even slightly prone to motion sickness, take seasickness pills or something similar beforehand. I’m still really glad I went and wouldn’t have wanted to miss this experience because of it.
Overall, such a fun and memorable day and easily one of my favorite things we did in Kauai. I would absolutely recommend Makana Charters to anyone wanting to experience the Na Pali Coast from the water.

Are whale sightings guaranteed?
No. Whales are wild animals, and their movement varies by day and by season, so we can’t guarantee a sighting on any specific tour. Dolphins, turtles, and reef life are commonly seen on this route regardless of season, and our crew’s years on this water give them the best chance of spotting a whale when one’s around.
Is this a different tour from your regular Na Pali Coast tour?
No. It’s the same route, the same boats, and the same snorkel stop, marketed for the season when whales are more likely to be part of what you see. If you’d rather book outside whale season, the regular Na Pali Coast tour runs the same way the rest of the year.
Is this tour good for kids?
Yes. Guests ages 4 and older can join on the Na Pali Kai III or Amelia K, both stocked with flotation devices for the snorkel stop and crewed by a team used to guests of every age on board. Kids who’d rather skip the water can stay on the boat for that part of the tour.
Can I book a private charter instead of a shared tour?
Yes. Twelve or fewer guests can book the Makana boat online as a private charter, one ticket per person. Above that, call (808) 338-9980 to arrange the Nā Pali Kai III instead.
What if it’s not whale season when I’m visiting?
You’ll still get the full Na Pali Coast tour: sea caves, the snorkel stop, and dolphins and turtles commonly seen along the route no matter when you visit.
