Na Pali Coast Whale Watching Tours

Na Pali Coast Whale Watching Tour is the same Na Pali Coast tour that runs all year, timed for the months when humpback whales pass through these waters, on boats that leave from the closest harbor to the coast on Kauai.

Why Choose Our Na Pali Coast Whale Watching Tour

Small Groups Mean Everyone Gets a Look When a Whale Surfaces

A humpback surfacing rarely gives more than a few seconds’ notice: a blow, a breach, a fluke, then it’s gone. Every boat we run carries somewhere between 12 and 36 guests, well under what most operators on the island put on the water, so more of the rail is actually open when something happens instead of guests packed shoulder to shoulder trying to get a look.

Less Transit Time, More Time Actually Watching

A whale can surface anywhere along this coastline, and the only way to have a shot at seeing it is to be out on the water already looking, not still motoring in from a farther harbor. Book a Kikiaola Harbor tour, and you’re in position before that window opens.

Five of our six boats launch from Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor in Kekaha, the shortest crossing to the Na Pali Coast from anywhere on Kauai, for less time spent getting there during whale season, more time with eyes on the water.

Our Amelia K rounds out the fleet from Port Allen, so however your trip is routed, there’s a Makana boat departing from the harbor that works for you.

Captains Who’ve Watched This Coast for Generations

Our captains’ ties to this water go back more than 200 years as a family, and most have lived on Kauai their whole lives, not a single whale season, but a lifetime of them.

That’s the same family history behind Makana Charters itself, passed down from one generation of captains to the next on what’s still a Native Hawaiian boat tour Kauai families return to season after season.

Choose Your Boat

A Na Pali Coast whale watching tour with Makana Charters runs on one of six catamarans, and all but one depart from Kikiaola. Full specs and photos for every boat are on our fleet page if you want to compare before booking.

Book Your Na Pali Coast Whale Watching Tour

Call (808) 338-9980 or book online. Our team is available 7 AM to 9 PM. If you’re visiting outside whale season, our standard Na Pali Coast tour covers the same route year-round.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Na Pali Coast Whale Watching Tour

When is whale season on the Na Pali Coast?

Humpback whales are typically in Hawaiian waters from around December through April, the same window any Kauai whale watching tour is built around. A Nāpali Coast whale watching tour is simply our regular tour, booked during those months. Call (808) 338-9980 if you want guidance on timing your trip around the season.

Are whale sightings guaranteed?

No. Whales are wild animals, and their movement varies by day and by season, so we can’t guarantee a sighting on any specific tour. Dolphins, turtles, and reef life are commonly seen on this route regardless of season, and our crew’s years on this water give them the best chance of spotting a whale when one’s around.

Is this a different tour from your regular Na Pali Coast tour?

No. It’s the same route, the same boats, and the same snorkel stop, marketed for the season when whales are more likely to be part of what you see. If you’d rather book outside whale season, the regular Na Pali Coast tour runs the same way the rest of the year.

Is this tour good for kids?

Yes. Guests ages 4 and older can join on the Na Pali Kai III or Amelia K, both stocked with flotation devices for the snorkel stop and crewed by a team used to guests of every age on board. Kids who’d rather skip the water can stay on the boat for that part of the tour.

Can I book a private charter instead of a shared tour?

Yes. Twelve or fewer guests can book the Makana boat online as a private charter, one ticket per person. Above that, call (808) 338-9980 to arrange the Nā Pali Kai III instead.

What if it’s not whale season when I’m visiting?

You’ll still get the full Na Pali Coast tour: sea caves, the snorkel stop, and dolphins and turtles commonly seen along the route no matter when you visit. Whales are simply the seasonal bonus stacked on top of all that. Call (808) 338-9980 if you’re not sure whether your travel dates fall inside the season.
