A sunset boat tour on the Na Pali Coast puts you and your date on the water facing west, with nothing between you and the cliffs but open ocean.
Makana Charters runs that tour out of Kekaha, leaving from Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor and Port Allen Call (808) 338-9980 to plan an evening on the water for two.
A west-facing table on land gives you one view, from one angle, for as long as you’re seated. A boat moving along the Na Pali Coast changes what’s in front of you as the cliffs shift and the light lowers. You walk to whichever rail has the better angle instead of staying put.
There’s also no reservation to lock in weeks ahead and no dress code to plan around. Guests board in whatever they’d wear to the beach, and a light jacket for the ride back covers the rest. If dinner comes after, there’s time to change; nothing about the boat requires dressing for it.
Makana runs smaller groups than many operators along this coast, from 12 to 32 guests, depending on the boat. For a couple, that difference shows up in practice: less time waiting to board, more room at the rail without competing for a spot, and a crew that can notice if the two of you are trying to find a quieter stretch of deck to yourselves.
Every captain and crew member on a Makana boat has spent years on Kauai, most of them their entire lives, not seasonal hires brought on for the summer rush.
The cultural narration guests hear on the water comes from that same familiarity: Hawaiian place names and history spoken by people whose own family history runs through this coastline. That grounding is part of why Makana has built up more than 10,000 five-star reviews across Google and TripAdvisor, a record built on repeat local knowledge rather than a rehearsed script.
The sunset cruise runs the same coastline as Makana’s daytime tours, timed for the last hour or so before sunset instead of full daylight.
The sunset cruise runs as a shared departure by default: your date and whoever else booked that evening, all on the same boat. Call (808) 338-9980 to book and to confirm which boat is running your date. The office takes calls daily from 7 AM to 9 PM.
For couples who want the boat to themselves instead, a private sunset charter is the option; pricing isn’t posted online since it depends on the date, the boat, and group size, so ask about it on the same call.

Both. Families do book the sunset departure, and it isn’t marketed as a couples-only trip. Its shorter, quieter evening schedule still draws a different crowd than the busier daytime tours. Call ahead if you want to ask how full a specific date is running.
It changes through the year, set against the actual sunset time for your date rather than a fixed slot. A July departure runs later in the evening than a November one, since the crew times boarding to have the boat on the coast right as the light turns, not before or after it. Call (808) 338-9980 to get the departure time for the date you’re booking.
Trips run in moderate weather conditions, and severe or unsafe conditions can change that on short notice. If that happens, guests are contacted directly and given the choice to reschedule, subject to availability, take a credit for a future date, or get a full refund. For a broader sense of what Kauai’s weather typically looks like across the year, the Kauai weather page covers seasonal patterns in more detail.
Often, though never guaranteed. The crew knows where dolphins and honu tend to surface along this stretch and will point them out if they’re around, and calmer evenings make them easier to spot from a distance.
Not necessarily. The Na Pali Kai III has the fleet’s only 360-degree walk-around deck, useful if uninterrupted rail time together is what you want. Seiko 1 and Seiko 2 run the same route and timing on smaller boats instead, with fewer other guests to share the rail with, which some couples prefer over deck space. Ask about availability across all three when you call.
Sharing, unless you book the boat privately. The standard sunset departure is a shared trip, so other travelers who booked that evening are on board with you, not just the two of you. Guests still find their own stretch of rail, especially on the Na Pali Kai III’s 360-degree deck, but the boat itself isn’t reserved exclusively for your group. If having the whole boat to yourselves matters more than the price difference, ask about a private sunset charter when you call.
Earlier than you’d book a dinner reservation. Only three boats run the sunset departure, against six running the daytime tours, so there are fewer evening seats to begin with. Call (808) 338-9980 to check what’s open for your date.
