A Kauai sunset cruise with Makana Charters runs along the Na Pali Coast in the afternoon and early evening, when the cliffs shift from green to deep amber and the shadows pool inside the sea caves.
We depart from Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor in Kekaha (the closest harbor to the Na Pali Coast on the island), so the time we’d otherwise spend in transit gets spent on the coast, working the coastline while the light is at its best.

The Route: Na Pali Coast in Evening Light
The cliffs line the northwest shore, walls of green rising directly from the ocean. In the evening, the light cuts across the cliff faces at a low pitch, deepening the greens and pulling out textures that midday sun washes flat.
We follow the coastline from Polihale, where the sand meets the base of the cliffs at the end of the road, northwest toward the Kalalau Valley. Kalalau Valley is accessible only from the water or by a long backcountry trail, and most visitors never see it.
At sunset, the valley’s waterfall threads down through vegetation that catches every color in the fading light.
Past Kalalau, the Honopū Arch comes into view. Two beaches sit separated by a massive stone arch that you can’t reach by land. Film crews kept returning to this stretch: the Archway served as a location for King Kong, James Bond, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Six Days Seven Nights.
Spinner dolphins and Pacific Bottlenose dolphins are commonly seen along the route. Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) surface near the caves and along the shore.
The Sea Caves: What You Can Actually Access
On the sunset cruise, you can go inside the Na Pali Coast sea caves as long as ocean conditions allow on the day of your tour.
The sea caves on this stretch of coast include Pirates Cave (Waiahuakua in Hawaiian), Rainbow Falls, and the Honopū Arch. Our catamarans are built low and narrow enough to enter the caves and position close to the archway. Most larger boats running tours from Port Allen can’t do this: their decks stay at the cave mouth while ours goes dark inside the walls.
We get inside the sea caves more often than most operators on the island because of the boats we run and where we depart from. We don’t promise cave access on any specific tour: the ocean decides that on the morning of your trip.
Swell height and surge both factor in. Our captains have been reading these conditions their entire lives and push as far in as the water safely allows.
When conditions cooperate, the Pirates Cave entry involves the boat going dark inside the cave walls, sound amplifying off the rock, and light entering from the other side. A photograph captures the shape of it, not the full experience.
Why the Departure Point Matters
Departing from Kikiaola Harbor instead of Port Allen translates to up to an hour more time on the Na Pali Coast, and on a sunset cruise, that’s not a minor detail.
Port Allen is the main commercial harbor on Kauai’s south shore and the departure point for most tour operators on the island. Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor sits further west, significantly closer to where the Na Pali cliffs actually begin. The transit difference between the two harbors is roughly 30 minutes each direction.
For a sunset cruise, that extra time isn’t a bonus: it’s the whole point. The golden-hour window is fixed. A boat spending an extra 30 to 60 minutes getting to and from the coast reaches the caves as the light is already fading, or turns back before the color peaks. We’re already positioned close to the coast when the light starts working those cliff walls.
The Boats: Which Catamarans Run the Sunset Cruise
The sunset cruise runs on the Na Pali Kai III and on the Seiko 1 and Seiko 2 power catamarans, all departing from Kikiaola Harbor.
Na Pali Kai III holds up to 32 guests and has a 360-degree walk-around deck. Photographers specifically request this boat: you can move freely to both sides and the bow without asking anyone to shift, so when the cave entrance is on the port side, and the cliff face catching color is to starboard, you can cover both. The minimum age is 4 years old.
The Seiko 1 and Seiko 2 each hold up to 16 guests and are power catamarans built specifically for the Na Pali Coast. The smaller group size means less time at the boarding ladder and more room at the rail. The minimum age for both is 9 years old.
All boats include snorkel gear, flotation devices, a deli-style lunch, and soft drinks. Freshwater showers are available on the larger boats. Guests may bring their own alcohol, but it can only be consumed after the snorkeling portion of the tour.
