What is a Catamaran? | Makana Charters NaPali Coast Cruises | Kauai, Hawaii

In Makana, Na Pali Coast by Makana Charters

Makana Charters operates two twin-diesel Catamaran boats for our cruises up to Na Pali Coast. Many people are curious what a Catamaran actually is, as many tour operators on Kauai boast catamaran adventures.

Some mistake the translation of catamaran to be a sailboat. But in fact, the word “Catamaran” actually refers to having multiple hulls of equal length. It can be powered by either wind or propeller.

The advantage to these boats is the stability – having a wide-base means less side-to-side rocking, and better comfort when the waters are rougher. Since Kauai is an island in the middle of the pacific, these rough waters can happen often.

Since there are two hulls on the boat, they can be thinner than a monohull boat, meaning an ability to go faster over the water than a single-hull boat of the same length.

There are many choices to make when deciding what type of boat to use on the Na Pali Coast. Our family has been operating tours on the coast for 30 years, so we feel that our choice to use the stable catamarans comes with a bit of experience.

We are confident that you will be happy with your cruise, no matter what the conditions.  And thousands of happy guests have enthusiastically agreed.

So come see for yourself – our tours leave plenty of time to explore the coast, as well as have plenty of time for snorkeling, photo opportunities, and cave exploring (weather permitting). Our crew is ready to share the knowledge of this unique coastline with everyone curious enough to ask.

Being a small, native-Hawaiian owned company, we can offer you a fantastic tour at a great price as we share with you our beautiful back yard.
